Yeong Seak Ling is a well-known master in Water- Colour, Acrylic and Oil painting. He grew up in Penang. In 1966, when he was the Chairman of Chung Ling High School Art Club, he had won the major award in Salon Malaysia National Art Competition in the 70s. He was one of the founder members of the “Utara Art Group”, the earliest contemporary art group that propagated the contemporary art idioms in the northern region of Malaysia in the 70s. Now he serves as the Founder/President of ArtGrup Penang that established in 2003 until now. His earlier works were mainly abstract. He had exploited an innovative water-colour technique to paint on 8 foot canvas. He was the recipient of the major awards for the Malaysian Landscape- Water Colour Competitions organized by the National Art Gallery in 1982 and 1984. During 2005, He started to concentrate on Oil Painting.

Yeong Seak Ling has become a full time artist since1991. His superb realistic rendering of subject-matters related with Malaysia which reflect the quaint and charming essence and the characteristics of Malaysia have captured the hearts of many. Amongst his most popular themes are: Rubber Plantation Series, Pigeon Series, Heritage Buildings, Old Window Series, Kampung House Series, Malaysian Kampung Life Series and Malaysian Sky Series.

Important international publications that featured Yeong Seak Ling’s painting as includes: Reader’s Digest (cover art) – Chinese version 1996; Destination (cover art) - publication of Citibank 1995; “Warna & Rupa” (cover art) - Bank Negara Collection 2002; The International Museum Engagement Diary 2007 Published by ICOM Foundation Collection; CFM International Fine Art Wall Calendar 2008 (Feature 12 artists from 12 countries) and many others. 

Statement By Artist:
     I am a self-taught artist. I practiced charcoal drawing, water colour and oil painting when I was still in secondary school (1961 -1967). I was the President of the Art Club in the Chung Ling High school, Penang. My mentors were Mr. Khor Ean Ghee, Mr. Lee Cheng Yong, Mr. Chuah Thean Teng and Mr. Tan Chiang Keong. In 1966, I won the Salon Malaysia Third Prize (Water Colour Section). 

       I concentrated mainly on water colour for more than 25 years (1965 – 1990).  My subject matters were landscape and abstraction.  In 1990, I began to focus on theme related to Penang scenes, heritage buildings and culture. I have developed a new technique of my own to paint large scale watercolour on paper and on canvas.  My intention is to express the mood, quintessence of buildings, trees and old walls, rocks and pigeons…Realizing the limitation of water colour, I started to paint with acrylic from 1995 to 2005. I began to concentrate on Kampung Life series. Acrylic has become the medium of my art for more than 10 years. Recently, I felt the need to change to oil to satisfy my need to express my innermost feelings and thoughts about ‘Beauty’, Identity and Culture
